Should I apply reinforcement?

In this article, we will discuss concrete reinforcement. Is it necessary to apply reinforcing bars in a concrete countertop?

Applying reinforcement

Do you want to know if it is necessary to apply reinforcement in projects made with Concretematters concrete? Our answer is simple. Because our concrete is modified, it is almost twice as strong as normal construction concrete once it has completely hardened. Among other things, it contains very small PVA fibres.

So it should be very strong; more than strong enough for a countertop, for instance.

Reinforcing bars

However, if constructions get bigger, and thereby heavier as a consequence, it is advisable to use some reinforcing bars in the long parts of very large projects.

Often you will not wait for the concrete to be completely hardened before finishing it off. For example, when lifting and turning, you might just exert more force on your project than you intend.

For this reason, it is advisable to apply 6 mm reinforcing bars around the edge of a project like a countertop with a cut-away for a washbasin or stovetop. Make sure the bars are at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) from the surface, or they might show. The bars are especially effective when applied to the bottom of the final product. When casting, you can suspend it using iron wire, which you can later cut level with the underside of the finished product.
